Freeport. In January, LINCT received a grant
from the Long Island Community Foundation designed to support women’s literacy
using the Learn and Earn program model. Our partner is the Even Start Family
Literacy program which is designed to serve undereducated parents and their
very young children in the communities of Freeport and Roosevelt, Long
Island. Currently, 10 young mothers attend the Learn and Earn computer
class as part of their overall adult education/GED program. While they learn,
their young children participate in an enriched pre-school class emphasizing
early literacy development. In the adult class, the instructor integrates
basic education lessons with the computer skills training, e.g. students
learn word processing and create their writing assignments or vocabulary
work on the computer. They also write material they can read to their children.
