Val is working over time as a Bellhop to show what zipped files and zipped archives are. Think of zipped files as being like clothes packed in a suitcase. A suitcase is a convient way to carry lots of stuff but when it is packed we can't see what is inside it. When it is full we can fit many different kinds of things in there but we still just call it "my suitcase". When we "zip" a bunch of individual files into one file we are "packing" their contents, reducing their size and saving it in one file with the extension .zip. | ![]() Zipped files and Zipped archives mean the same thing. Think of them like Suitcases |

When we open the suitcase we can see all the things we packed. When we "open" a zipped file we can see all the other files we have stored or "archived" in there. Just like with the suitcase, it is hard to see all the files until they are unpacked. The benefits of keeping things in a suitcase are that they take up less space, are kept all together and they are protected. This is the same reason we use zipped files/archives. | ![]() |

When we unpack our clothes or files we can put them in place where we can get them easily and use them. Unpacking our files to our hard disk or a floppy allows us to use them as programs or data. Once they are unpacked we can be looking as good as Val. | ![]() |
