Greenport LINCT Community

Greenport is one of our oldest LINCT Communities (since 1994). It is a partnership with Community Action for Southold Town (CAST), a community action agency focused on family and community development. CAST hosts both day and evening Learn and Earn classes at its office which also houses a clothing exchange, counseling services and other kinds of classes. Learn & Earn participants are drawn from among CAST’s own clients as well as the community at large. CAST takes care of publicity and recruitment.

Identifying instructors has been a cooperative effort between LINCT and CAST. Instructors are paid by the Patchogue/Medford Adult Literacy Consortium (part of the Patchogue/Medford School District), which provides adult basic education, GED preparation, ESL and now, computer literacy classes throughout Long Island.

In addition to classes, LINCT has made a community computing center available at CAST (computer and printer) for community use. In the future LINCT would like to partner with the newly opened Youth Center to provide both Learn and Earn and Refurbishing classes to the village’s youth population. Eventually we would like to have a refurbishing and technical assistance center located within the village which would assure a continuous flow of computers for classes and a source of technical assistance and troubleshooting for LINCT graduates.
