Hampton Bays – In another famous “Hampton”, a class designed especially for students with disabilities meets in the Community Center at Bishop Ryan Village.  This space, as well as a connection to the Internet is donated by Bishop Ryan Village.  Funds supporting the class come from Catholic Charities.  In this class, emphasis is placed on opportunities for working at home once people have developed the necessary computer skills.  This class is also opened to the senior citizens who reside at Bishop Ryan Village at the community at large.  Senior citizens are especially anxious to keep in touch with family and friends who do not live close by.  Owning their own computer and learning skills necessary to e-mail opens a whole new world for these seniors.

LINCT Computer Refurbishing classes are held at the Hampton Bays High School.  During the school year students learn how to refurbish donated computers.  At the end of the school term students who have worked on these computers also earn a computer and take it home for their personal use.  The classes at the high school are held during the school day.

Computers produced by the students are then used in LINCT Basic Computer Skills Classes.  The sense of community is enhanced through the efforts of these students providing computers to LINCT classes.  Imagine the sense of pride in the grandson who refurbished computers during the school year that went on to be used by his grandmother in a LINCT Learn and Earn Basic Computer Skills Program.  We have had three generations in one family benefit from this partnership all working together to close the digital divide.
